Position Overview

Sharjah Maritime Academy is seeking a Faculty Member in Maritime Business at the Lecturer–Assistant Professor level to join its College of International Transport & Logistics.

The successful candidate will provide research-informed teaching in maritime business, shipping, logistics, and related disciplines. The role also includes curriculum development, assessment, research, academic quality assurance, student development, and engagement with industry.

Responsibilities

The Faculty Member in Maritime Business will:

  • Teach subjects such as Chartering, Commercial Ship Management, Maritime Business, and Marine Insurance & Finance across degree and diploma levels, as assigned by the Head.
  • Deliver lectures and lead seminar groups using appropriate, innovative, and effective teaching approaches.
  • Participate in examinations and assessments, including setting papers, preparing marking schemes, and agreeing marks with other staff.
  • Use appropriate and innovative assessment practices to support learning and teaching.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the discipline and incorporate research-based knowledge into teaching.
  • Comply fully with timetable requirements and the annual academic calendar.
  • Conduct research for career development in alignment with the Academy's ambition to be a research-active institution.
  • Provide students with timely, constructive, formative, and comprehensive feedback through appropriate forms of communication.
  • Deliver courses in other departments when required by the Line Manager.
  • Contribute to programme and institutional quality assurance, academic advising, and committee work.
  • Assist the Head of the Maritime Business Program as required to support the Academy's strategic priorities.
  • Travel when required and occasionally work outside standard working hours as specified in the contract.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates must have:

  • A PhD in Maritime Business, Maritime Studies, Shipping, Logistics, Supply Chain, Transport, Business Administration, or a closely related discipline from a recognised university.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant higher education teaching experience following completion of the PhD, preferably at the Senior Lecturer, Assistant Professor, or equivalent academic rank.
  • Demonstrated subject-matter knowledge and academic experience in Maritime Business, including areas such as shipping and port management, maritime economics, maritime logistics, supply chain management, maritime law, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, course delivery, assessment, and academic quality assurance.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity and research, including peer-reviewed publications or other recognised academic outputs relevant to the discipline.
  • Evidence of academic progression and contribution to higher education, such as programme or course leadership, supervision, research projects, accreditation activities, or academic administration.
  • The ability to speak, write, and communicate fluently in English at the highest level of professionalism.
  • The ability to integrate theory and practice through case studies, simulations, and applied research.
  • The ability to work as a team player and be approachable and sensitive toward all cultures.
  • The ability to work under pressure when required, with the intention of completing tasks as promptly and efficiently as possible.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

The following are preferred or considered an advantage:

  • A master's and bachelor's degree in a relevant maritime, business, logistics, transport, or related discipline.
  • Industry or professional experience in the maritime, shipping, ports, logistics, or related sectors.
